FreshDirect CEO David McInerney is a former chef who still delights in cooking at home
FreshDirect CEO David McInerney shares the dishes that fill his summer.
One of David McInerney’s most memorable meals is linguine with clam sauce—memorable because it was eaten under his covered porch during a spectacular thunderstorm. No matter the weather, McInerney always prefers to entertain outside of his Bellport home. Bare feet, family-style food and kids running around with s’mores are the backdrop to his summer in the Hamptons each year.
McInerney, co-founder of online food service FreshDirect, has now assumed the role of CEO ahead of the company’s expansion to reach the Hamptons this season. “We kept hearing that they wanted to spend more time outdoors and not in the store food shopping, so it was a natural extension for our business,” McInerney says.
His family digs up their own shellfish to grill on their Weber and serve with butter
As a chef-turned-CEO, McInerney’s expertise naturally spills over into his personal entertaining with friends and family. He notes that there are usually a few components of a night’s meal that are either grown or caught; he and his kids have been known to dig up clams to throw on the grill until they open, before drizzling them with butter. Another favorite summertime dish of his is spaghetti with pesto and sauteed zucchini, topped with shaved bottarga—his newest fun food discovery. Whatever he’s dishing up, it’s usually on his Weber grill over natural charcoal. “I try to get as much done as early in the day as possible,” McInerney says.
Part of the joy of entertaining in the summertime is the experience that goes along with the preparation. One of his favorite family meals is cold steamed blue crabs, which the kids love to catch. Steamed with Old Bay and laid out on brown paper over the picnic table with mallets and drawn butter, it’s one of those meals that comes paired with irreplaceable memories. McInerney says, “Sharing good, fresh food with family and friends is part of the great summer experience.”
